So I remember hearing on the news about the planned Lifestyle Center type mall for Bricktown. Has anyone heard any more details about it since then....more conrete info on location, stores, etc. Is it still just a concept to be built on?

It about dang time they put something in besides a restaurant huh!

I know of a lot of not-yet-proposed plans I can't get into, but this thread is all I know about what you saw on the news:

Have you or anyone you know shopped the existing retail in Bricktown? I think there are two or three clothing stores and an art gallery. I have seen the clothing store windows as I pass by on an early morning jog, but the selection appears a little youthful for me. Never been in anything retail in Bricktown that I recall. I do some business with Teena Hicks but she's on the mezinine of The Corp. Tower on Main west of Robinson, downtown, and not likely to move to or open a location in Bricktown.

What sort of retail do you see in Bricktown? Seems like it would need to work good for tourists at this point since there's not enough residents to support much. But locals might shop a low end modern furniture store like Directions, formerly of Cassidy Square now located on West Reno. Or perhaps a higher end modern furniture store like a Design Within Reach look alike or even a location for a chain like DWR. Liquor & Wine store might be a tough go being so close to Byron's. I can't come up with much in the way of a concept that I would want to invest in down there at this point.

Another big question is where would you put what ever retail operation you wanted to open? I can't come up with a great location either.

I think we'll see mostly new bars and restaurants for a few more years and some of those will be replacing some that continue to close up shop.

I've shopped at the Bass Pro before. Got a nice pair of golf clubs...

The Old Downtown Guy- 09-15-2006
Once again the old guy overlooks or disremembers the most obvious or the most recent. I took my oldest grand son into Bass Pro about a month ago to buy a compound bow and some arrows to terrorize the neighborhood pets in Pryor. First time in the place. Enjoyed the fish tank....damn big catfish.....way cool. It was pretty late, after a baseball game and the place still had lots of customers, so I guess they're doing OK.

As long as the city get's their check for rent I'm fine. okmetropolis/028.gif

BTW, which two clubs did you buy?

I actually played a round with just my five iron and putter and scored about the same. But, I'm not much of a golfer, but I do enjoy the stroll around Lincoln West.

Yukon needs a good course beside westbury. The counter intelligence there is so snooty.

You said there is not much of a population to support Bricktown, aren't there a crapload of contruction projects that will add thousands of new residents to the vicinity, and i don't really think those residents will be poor either.

The Old Downtown Guy- 09-15-2006
There are certainly a lot of new residential units under construction and on the drawing boards, all together, they only represent a couple of thousand new residents to be added over the next two or three years. I don't know what the numbers are that significient retail development would need to open more than a handfull of botique size stores, but I wouldn't be disappointed with an additional 15,000 square feet of new retail development in the next couple of years, not including a new grocery store. At that pace, by 2015, there will be a strong retail base downtown to serve the projected 5000 +/- residents.

Here is the link to Downtown OKC Inc. where you can look at descriptions of all of the existing and planned residential projects downtown. The last one on the list, "The Triangle" is by far the largest and calls for 1000 residential units. That will represent about 1500 new downtown residents just by itself, but it will take at least five years to build it out.

I got a pair of stainless steel hybrid clubs. I've seen that, but I don't think much of that particular page. There are already about 5,000 folks living in downtown according to the most recent population totals. This could easily double (and then some but not quite triple) by 2015.

Downtown could easily support a Whole Foods tomorrow morning. I think any new lifestyle development would be really neat if there was a Whole Foods in it, and then maybe like lofts on top of that. That development would really be the full monty.

We will have a lot more than 5,000 residents in downtown by 2015. By the time the 1,600 (rounded way down) currently proposed residential units are completed, that will mean at least 2,000-3,000 new residents, on top of the current 3,000. And I think we'll continue to see more residential projects being announced over the next year or so, since only about 2,000 are proposed and demand studies indicate a demand for at least 8,000 more units.

The latest numbers:

Working downtown: 24,115
Living downtown: 3,995 (16.56%)

There are no numbers for "attending church downtown", a number which I am fixing to join. smile.gif

I just joined the list of "getting a haircut downtown."

Anyone else ever get their haircut at the First National Barbershop? It's located on the top floor of the First National Center - since '31. I Just found a new barber.

shane- 09-16-2006
No way! That's really cool! I hope the new owner doesn't kick him out.

Is it pretty expensive to get a cut there?

wsucougz- 09-17-2006
14 bucks - Lee Hill - 236-3529. It's a really nice cut though - heavy usage of the shears.
