Dell is looking to add employees to its 1,500 employee call center on the Oklahoma River. Dell says that by the end of the year, they will have about 2,000 employees at their OKC center.
The jobs that will be added will likely be more tech support jobs- higher paying at base salary than the sales jobs but with no commissions.
Officials at Dell said that within a few months, we could hear an announcement about the groundbreaking of the third 120,000 sf office building on the campus. The capacity of the existing two office buildings is reportedly 2,850 employees.
The OKC center has gained attention from Dell nationally, because of its creative and productive work procedures.
"I'm hearing the buzz. People are saying, 'How do we transfer to Oklahoma?'" A Dell official said.

Well, procedurally, the facility is doing very well. It's the leading call center for Dell. So basically, we're #1 for Call Centers!!
Besides that, once they get it up to 2,000, they still have a very long ways to go before there are 4,500 folks on the pay roll. And their third building is fixing to break ground? They will need more space. And if the facility keeps doing so amazingly well, they will continue to pour more and more into Oklahoma City, and this facility will have to expand beyond the dopey three buildings they have.
Dell does not like large facilities, they want one central headquarters in Round Rock, TX. They don't want anything getting near the size of that. The folks in Round Rock don't want to be intimidated by the size of any other facility they run, so it will be interesting to see if they recognize a good deal in Oklahoma City or if they sit on the opportunity to be expanding the top call center.

How supportive has the city been in getting this facility blown up... I mean, would the city push hard to persuade Dell to expand to like 10K?
Spartan65- 09-13-2006
Err, well city and chamber support has been overwhelmind. Dell likes to keep their facilities around 500ish employees, and the chamber did quite a lot of negotiating to get them to up it to 4,500. Who's to say they won't budge more with a little talking-to?

That would be a mega-large call center. And, with current development style at Dell, one mega-large parking lot.
Spartan65- 09-13-2006
No there would have to be more advanced parking accomodations. I don't see how they plan to have 4,500 folks and a parking lot. That will be sort of like the Great Parking Plains.

I work on Meridian, so I drive by the place on the highway every day. The parking lots they have are ginormous. But they planned it well because even the farthest space aren't any farther to walk than a college kid does to class. It's a little more inconvenient than being right outside the door, but its not terrible. But they won't ever have all 4,000 employees there at once either. Remember they will work in shifts, so they will be constantly rotating employees all day long. They have plenty ground space on the campus for another building and its parking, but the land west of the campus is empty too. It would be a great place for expansion, or another business to get river-front property.
I think most people share your on the call center thing. I wish we had some more real tech jobs.
When I'm out at lunch though, the Dell employees I see are always loud an obnoxious though. Anyone else ever have that experience? It's like you can pick them out without even seeing the nametag.

A lot of people are obnoxious, I've never assumed they all worked in the same place though. Wouldn't they all be working at Obnoxious Inc., if that was the case? Anyway, yes there is plenty of room for expansion, obviously.
And of course if they expand so much they DO run out, we can always build islands in the river...

Haha. Islands of office space and rivers of parking...

There ya go, just drive your water taxi to work! LOL
