Statewide vote to be sought on plan to increase types of legal retail outlets
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Grocery and convenience stores would be allowed to sell wine and strong beer under an initiative petition touted by a group calling itself Oklahomans for Modern Laws.

"What we are trying to do is to make it more available to the consumer, to give the consumer more accessibility to these items," said Brian Howe, a spokesman for the group.

Many Oklahomans would like to buy a bottle of wine at a grocery store when they pick up items for a meal, he said.

Changing the law to permit such sales would bring higher-end grocery stores to the state, Howe contends. (Whole Foods)

Howe said Oklahomans for Modern Laws would like to circulate the petition next spring and possibly have the proposal on the ballot by 2008.

He estimated that about 200,000 signatures will be needed to get the issue on the ballot.

Let me know when I can eat a hamburger while walking backwards in downtown OKC and not get arrested...

There needs to be a legal provision for pimp outlets... and other finer retail outlets.
