Union, Jenks Renew Backyard Bowl Rivalry
September 5, 2006
The Union-Jenks rivalry, now known as the 'Backyard Bowl', renews this week as the eyes of Oklahoma High School football will be glued to Skelly Stadium for the year's most anticipated matchup.
This year, Union is coming into the game off a 34-7 loss to the nation's number one team, the Hoover Buccaneers from Alabama. Jenks also had a little trouble last week before scoring twice in the fourth quarter to defeat Bixby, 28-14.
But, it's time to put the first week behind them and get ready for the biggest game of the season.
Jenks and Union have combined to win the last ten Class 6A state championships, with Jenks winning six straight from 1996-2003 and Union winning three of the last four.
In the past 14 meetings since 1996, Jenks has won nine. But, the past six have been evenly split. The two teams have also met five times in that span for the Class 6A title, with Jenks winning four of those games.
And, Jenks has won the past two regular season meetings, which became known as the 'Backyard Bowl' in 2004. The winner receives the trophy and each school shares thousands of dollars thanks to a yearly donation from MidFirst Bank.
Quite possibly the best Union-Jenks game came last year, when Jenks trailed by 17 points in the fourth quarter before scoring 28 points in the final six minutes to pull off a 48-44 victory. Isaac Norman's 63-yard touchdown catch with 18 seconds left put the finishing touches on the win.
This will be the first time in a decade that neither team comes in ranked number one in the Associated Press poll. This week, the Muskogee Roughers took over the top spot while Jenks is second and Union is third.
And, Union can't relax after this week is over. They host the Roughers on September 15th.
