I wouldn't mind a change to "Myriad Gardens" but that's already what most people call it. It's all we have left of "the Myriad" name though, so we should keep it. And it's kind of a random and cool name.

What about Myriad Commons, and just why is this "Myriad" name so special?
The Old Downtown Guy- 09-13-2006
Leave well enough alone.
It is very popular with tourists and the "botanical" part suggests much more than just a park with trees and flowers. The "tube" is the botanical component of the garden and it houses collections of plants from around the world that couldn't survive in the open here in Oklahoma. It's a great place to visit, both inside and outside the botanical tube.

Yes, botanical is very important in the title because it says it's not just a park, makes it a more significant destination.
I think the name Myriad is important because of the way people reacted to having The Myriad renamed and renovated- they did not want to see the change. So, Myriad Botanical Gardens is like the last memory of what those people fought to save. It's an interesting story, I think.
Any insight on why the name was originally chosen? Had to be around the same time as the Pei plan, right?
You're just on a "commons" kick lately, eh Spartan?
The Old Downtown Guy- 09-13-2006
Let's just get off of this trendy "Commons" thing. Here a commons, there a commons, everywhere a commons. And "Quarter" too . . . let's ditch "Quarter" for sure.
But if we have to change the name let's really go all out with Myriad Commons at Arts Central Quarter Place District.
Actually I would rather get rid of "Cox" and go back to calling our convention center The Myriad Convention Center. What does "Cox Business Center" Mean? The center of business? The center of Cox's business? Do I want to be in the center of Cox's business. Myriad Convention Center makes a lot more sense anyway. Myriad is a pretty interesting name. Not any other Myriads around, but "Cox" is just another money grubbing, monopoly with their name stuck everywhere. When their rights expire, and I'm sure that they expire at some point, let's get off this naming rights crap that turns our public buildings into giant billboards for companies that could care less about Oklahoma City other than it being their "market", and they want to "brand" their "market". Brand this Mr. Cox . . . . and just let me have the channels I want ala carte without all of the six or eight shopping channels and fourty eleven other shows that just take up space and I have to click through trying to find something interesting or entertaining to watch. . . . GOOD LUCK . . . . How about just letting me pick out the ten or twelve channels that I have time to watch and in return I give you some reasonable amount of money? Okey dokey? Nooooooo . . . can't do that kids . . . makes too much sense . . . And why isn't there an on line program listing. I don't waste my money buying a Sunday newspaper (loose use of the term newspaper) so I have to watch that dumb assed TV Guide thing scrolling its four lines of text below a bunch of idiots talking to Joan Rivers. Doesn't she know that she died about fifteen years ago. Jeezzzzz. And all this extreme everything on there. I think I saw an Extreme Church Pancake Breakfast on there. . . . And then . . . .
OK, I think I feel better now.

Say howsabout the Extreme Quarter Commons?
Bonsecour- 09-13-2006
I like Commons. It's pretty stylish for a big city to have a Commons area, and it perfectly describes the role the Myriad Gardens play in our live-work-play community.
The Old Downtown Guy- 09-13-2006
You can't fly a kite there. If you can't fly a kite there, it can't be a commons. Thats the rule.
Doug Loudenback- 09-13-2006
I voted no change necessary. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Spartan65- 09-13-2006
If we expand the gardens so many blocks when the Crosstown is moved, which we really NEED to do, then you could probably fly a kite. I would love to fly a kite. Who else wants to fly a kite in downtown?
UrbanEnthusiast- 09-13-2006
I personally like the name Myriad Botanical Gardens. I also like the gardens themselves. In fact, I was just there a couple of weeks ago. I must say I was quite impressed. Here are my pics from that day (also included are a couple of pics of Bricktown and some of the gardens at the Philbrook in Tulsa).
Really good shots, I dig these park & city type shots...

That's the coolest thing about the Myriad Gardens - they are right downtown. A nice oasis in the middle of the urban jungle. Speaking of downtown, I think downtown OKC is really nice. I did not walk around it much, but I looked up the streets and what little I saw I liked. OKC is actually quite similar to Indianapolis, IMO.

Did you all like the wrecking ball a little too much in the 70s?
