OCU's dorms are behind OCU. There's a lot of new construction right on 23rd.

Walker Hall is the one that I was talking about, it sits right on 23rd and the parking lot stretched along 23rd seems like a waste of frontage. It isn't as prominant since they built the new law building next to it. I haven't been in the area in a couple of years so I don't know what they might have done along the 23rd Street frontage.

Ummm.......I had been to Walker a few times in my youth wink.gif

I went to a TU-Lousville game when a friend of mine who was from Tulsa played for Louisville (he started at OU and transferred there when Gibbs became the coach). I also remember going by the campus when I would stop at Starship. Any word on how the new Starship is doing?

My friend goes to UCO and he was taking to me about the campus...

They just renovated a hotel and made it into dorms... Most of the buildings have been remodeled... He mentioned something about the West dorms?

Oh and yes--- Tulsa a 49-24 loss.

Sad day today... okmetropolis/eusa_boohoo.gif

Wasn't that UCO in Edmond? The old Sheraton Hotel across from the campus on Second Street. Most of the dorms there are on the north side of the campus.

They have too many with the same initials, OCU-Oklahoma City University, UCO-University of Central Oklahoma (it will always be CSU in my mind) and OC or OCUSA, the former OCC.

Yeah UCO in Edmond... He says he like it a lot but the food could be better...

That new dorm, all the dorms in there are sweets and he stays on the 3rd floor...

I always felt the TU campus needed more of a "signature" along the main roads, this looks good.

I wish OCU had their dorms somewhere other than along 23rd Street, it could have made a much better signature along that street if they didn't have all of the parking lots right there.

It seems intresting all this talk about Oklahoma Colleges and rebuilding, I would like to point out, that Cameron also has done a great deal of remodeling aswell.

On Spartan's board was mentioned about a lot of the building going on with the new dorms and trying to give Cameron a better chance at getting more students.

I personaly think that Tulsa Univ. and OCU both look nice and both offer a lot to both communites, and I hope Cameron, can offer in the near future they same to Lawton.

After all of this rebuilding it would be nice to see schools like TU and OCU do even better in the Top 100 rankings.

TU moved up 5 places this year to 88th best school in the nation... They had to change all there brochures...

What type of programs does OCU offer? Is that a private school...?

bluedogok- 09-11-2006
OCU is a private Methodist school, they are known for their performing arts program having had most of the Oklahoma Miss America (Jane Jayroe-1967, Susan Powell-1981, Shawntel Smith-1996) winners until the current one. The actress (Broadway/TV) Kristen Chenowith is an OCU alum. They also have quite a few others who have gone onto Broadway or opera from OCU.

I have also heard they have a pretty good business school with a focus on international business. I knew a few people who were in the advertising program 15-20 years ago and it seemed like a pretty good program.

The University of Tulsa’s two-page profile in “Best 361 Colleges” recognizes TU as “one of the sleeper gems of the Great Plains, a private school large enough to house numerous top-flight programs but small enough to facilitate one-on-one instruction . . . .”

I'll fill you in some on the construction at OCU in the last few years because its been a construction boom. I graduated from there a few years ago and still go on campus from time to time.

In 2000, they opened the Freede Center. You've seen it on TV when they used to have that Pro-Tennis tournament there. The building it replaced (Frederickson Fieldhouse), while historic, had major problems and had to be torn down in 2005. They are building a swanky new dorm in its place. It will have a multi level parking garage (as most of Frederickson was underground, you won't really see the garage), then above will be a multi-level apartment style dorm. I believe that they said it will have individual bathrooms and be single resident rooms. They will be tearing down the two dorms on the west side of campus that have doors facing outside....obviously they have been a security concern over there years.

The new soccer field also opened in 2000 and recently had lights added...the stadium portion will be made more permanent in the next few years.

The new softball field (the first one finally ON campus), is being built across from Freede and the Soccer Field.

The baseball field added lights 2 years ago and will soon be building new stands as well.

The art building had an addition put on in 2004 that doubled the size of the building and gallery.

The new entrance to the campus was created with bronze busts of the Miss Americas and gave the front door a more collegiate look. Blackwelder will soon be closing permanently, so the "entrance" will really just be for visitors. I'm sure the street will be removed and a whole new drive type entrance put in.

In 2003 a new business school was constructed that is amazing. It is an amazing structure and the clasrooms are incredibly nice...especially the corporate rooms.

The admissions office moved into the old Methodist Chapter building on blackwelder. They added a floor to the building and made a generally better atmostphere for welcoming students.

The dance school moved into the old business building and they hvae renovated it and are currently adding on to it on the east end.

The new music building opened in August. It is hands down the best facility in the country. All you have to do it get a tour and you realize why it is so much better than anywhere in the country...and most of the world. Companies scrambled to try and get deals with the school of music so they could get their name in the building. Apple, Conn-Selmer, Ludwig/Musser, Steinway, etc.

They most recently renovated the student union and renamed it after the current president who has helped to oversee most of these changes.

The campus is currently pushing for divison I status in the NCAA as they add more sports to the imensely successful programs they already have.

I'm sure there are projects planned that I'm out of the loop on now.
